When I got up this morning at 8.30am there were some flurries, most of them thawed during the day though... But now it is really snowing like crazy! Robi did his honey-do today and put up the lights outside and I started the decorating frenzy indoors:-)

Pluto's revenge

My astronomicly inclined hubby told me yesterday (better late than never) that the dwarf planet formerly knows as "Xena" was officially named in September 2006 for the Greek goddess of chaos and strife - Eris. Even more interesting, the sattelite orbiting it, formerly known as "Gabrielle" was renamed in Dysnomia, in Greek mythology the daughter of Eris. Dysnomia is the demon spirit of Lawlessness - go figure as I am sure the pun is very much intended:-)

Star Trek Memorabilia Auction

And we have a winner:-) Hubby put down 3 absentee bids, we watched yesterday's auction online and there was some careful rejoicing when we found out that the first one we bid on was sold to an absentee bidder for the amount we were willing to pay. Could have been us, could have been somebody else. But now it is official - the Mirror Universe Door Plaque, made for the doors on the "Mirror Enterprise" and "Mirror Avenger" in "In A Mirror Darkly, Parts I and II" in Star Trek: Enterprise is in our possession, YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Science kicks some medieval monks' butt:-)

I am quite ecstatic about the whole Archimedes manuscript research project:
http://www.archimedespalimpsest.org/
They will have a live internet broadcast on Friday August 4th at 4pm ET, I cannot wait for that!
http://www.exploratorium.edu/archimedes/index.html
It is soooooooo cool that centuries after the original text of a bunch of Archimedes's works plus some assorted other ancient texts will finally be seen again. And it is also very ironic that a couple of "heathen" texts that have been scraped off centuries ago to make room for a prayer book have not gotten lost but secretly survived over all those years. Badly damaged though and mutilated by an early 20th century idiot who thought he could make it more worth if he adds a couple of fake paintings to it that are not even really in the same style as the written words... One wonders what else might still be out there.

Why did they have to burn the library in Alexandria to the ground? Maybe one day we can go back in time and rescue all the books just before it burns down. Wait, here's a thought - someone in the future did that and then burned the place down to cover up the whole thing:-) Boy, I am watching too much Sci-Fi, but who cares? At least I am not destroying ancients manuscripts while I am doing that.

WA state Pagan letter writing campaign

Religious freedom is once again in danger. Here we have a particularly sad example of a soldier who died fighting for freedom as the president sees it and is denied to be remembered as the person he was. As I am neither a registered voter nor a citizen there is not much that I can do besides spreading the word...

Here is another take on the issue from Witchvox:
http://www.witchvox.com/wren/wn_detail.html?id=15759

For everyone in WA state I highly reccomend a letter writing campaign to our
Senators (Cantwell and Murray) and to your district's Congressman decrying this decision that appears to be discrimination at its worst. Don't send them an email but a real letter, this issue should be worth more than the price for a stamp for everybody who believes in freedom:-)

Additionally the topic came up in a local newspaper http://www.heraldnet.com/stories/06/07/08/100wir_a6wiccan001.cfm
